About me and my prints

BA (Hons) Illustration, MA Multidisciplinary Printmaking

Born Wiltshire 1969

I’m a printmaker and illustrator, making artwork for galleries, clients and customers locally and internationally since 1991. I have a BA Honours Degree in Illustration and a Masters Degree in Multidisciplinary Printmaking from Bristol UWE. My work has been collected from Art Fairs in Bristol, London and New York, and sold extensively in galleries across the South West. I have been commissioned by Tate Galleries, National Trust and St Paul’s Cathedral.

I use traditional dip pens to make my ink drawings. My hand made prints are made at Spike Print Studio in Bristol and at my studio workshop at home in Wiltshire. I love the process of making prints, the time spent making the prints is so enjoyable and absorbing in itself, the finished product is not the only reward. I use both silkscreen and etching methods to make my prints. My work almost always starts with a line drawing either from life or using vintage postcards, maps, photos and memories. Rather than painting the colours, I make colour notes alongside ink drawing, then I mix and add colours later in the print studio. I prefer the quality of the colour made with printmaking than painting, both for aesthetic reasons and because it enables me to work in layers. The process of making each coloured layer by hand is so laborious compared to digital artworking, it enables, and forces, more considered decision making. The common theme I return to is ‘landmarks’. This could be a landmark on a journey, a building or a place, or they may be landmarks from my life, such as significant objects, maps or memories.

I am based in Wiltshire where I live with my partner, children and variable pets. My favourite thing to do apart from printing is being in the woods, by the sea, or in a busy city with family and friends. Follow me on instagram to see my journey back to hand made print.
